Tenedos
Named as Leukophrys in the Ancient Age, and Tenedos in Greek Mythology, Bozcaada has been invaded and changed hands many times throughout the history due to its strategic location. |
As it is evident from the excavations in the necropolis site on the island, the history of the island can be traced back to 3000 B.C. The first residents of the island who are known are Pelazzis. Then respectively, Phoenicians, Athenians, Greeks, Persians, Alexander the Great, Byzantines, Genoans, Venicians and the Ottoman took the possession of the island.
After the conquest of Istanbul by Mehmet the Conqueror Bozcaada gained importance for the Turks, and annexed to Ottoman land in 1455. After that date, Ottomans and Venicians fought to take possession of the Island several times, and sometimes the Venicians took the possession of the island.
After a long period under the control of the Ottomans, Bozcaada was occupied by Greece in 1912, but then annexed to Republic of Turkey along with Gökçeada with Lausanne Peace Agreement in 1923.
